First Plants of 2022

We have our first plants of 2022 in the ground! With the move we had to get things going a bit later than we would have liked to in our growing zone. That said, we have so many days of wonderful warm months ahead that iit is hard to feel too bad.

We have lots of seedlings soaking up the light on our indoor grow racks and now our first planting of sunflowers are testing out the new digs in the flower field!

First sunflowers and new irrigation what a great pairing!

We seem to have missed our cool season here, but I am still trying to grow some larkspur, bells of Ireland, snap dragons, scabiosa, and statice. I am pretty sure if those bloom they will be short lived, but it is a fun experiment! We will also have lots of time to grow them in the fall/winter.

Since our last frost was over in January I felt good starting our warm season annuals. We have planted Procut versions of the following sunflowers; peach, white night, white light, double quick, and orange. We halso have some zinnias that will be ready to be planted out in the next couple weeks, as well as celosia, cosmos, basil, cress, and many others.

It is so fun to have a field open and full of promise. We have moved swiftly to get our irrigation set up, seeds started, and excitement up!

If all continues to go well, we will have our first bunches ready for sale by the beginning of April! We will keep the updates coming over the next couple weeks and months to let you know what we learn about growing in the low desert.
